A new study from the National Center for Housing Counseling and Development (NCCHDC) has found that the vast majority of renters who are struggling to find a job in the Bay Area can find work locally if they find a good employer who also offers a guaranteed minimum wage and benefits package.
The study found that 72 percent of workers with disabilities and 50 percent of low-wage workers can find jobs in the city they are seeking to work in if they can find the right company that also offers the minimum wage.
“A lot of folks who are in the lowest wage, who are low-income, find work on Craigslist or Facebook and can find their first job,” said Dr. Joanne Lee, the NCCHDC’s executive director.
“But a lot of people in the middle of the wage scale and people with disabilities find it difficult to find jobs that are offered by employers that also provide affordable health care, paid sick days, paid family leave and other important benefits.”
Lee said the study also showed that many of those who are finding work in the cities where they work also have the skills and the job skills to be a good employee.
But for many people who aren’t finding a job, the question becomes: What can I do to get the job without getting a new position?
The study analyzed employment data for 1,100 workers in four Bay Area cities: San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley and San Jose.
It found that those who were unemployed in the past 12 months, had been out of work for less than a year and had less than $25,000 in their bank accounts were more likely to be found for work on the street than those who had jobs for more than 12 months.
Those who had been working in a traditional, salaried job, but were looking for a change were more than four times as likely to find work than those without jobs, the study found.
Lee said she is optimistic about the future of the Bay area.
“It is still a challenging economy,” Lee said.
“We have an economy where there are lots of people that are still unemployed, who have been out on the streets for a long time, who may have been able to get their first jobs through this recession.
We still have people struggling to get jobs in many areas of the city.””
We need to have a sense of optimism that the Bay is in good shape and that we can have a positive outcome in this economy,” she said.
The report comes at a time when the Bay has been experiencing a massive economic downturn.
The economy shed more than 800,000 jobs in October and November, and the unemployment rate is now 4.9 percent.
“People are feeling the impact of the recession,” Lee added.
“There are a lot more people that need help and want help, and it’s just really difficult to get that help.
We need to help people, but we also need to make sure we can make sure that those people that can help us, get that support.”
